It is a wonderful story that tells about Bear and Bird’s wishes. After discussing the story, we talked about our wishes and goals for the year!
The students had to set a goal and color a soccer ball as a reminder! The goals were displayed in the hallway!
Most students wrote that they wanted to learn to read.
Here are a few different samples:
My goal for kindergarten is to count to 30.
My goal for kindergarten is to learn everything.
My goal for kindergarten is to have friends.
My goal for kindergarten is to learn letters.
How to Record Goal Setting
We wrote 2 complete sentences each day to go with our goals on chart paper! We focused on reading names, writing letters to make words, leaving spaces, and using an ending mark!
It is great review and writing 2 sentences a day helps keep the focus of 5 year old students! The colored words helps with Word Awareness, a beginning skill for Phonological Awareness.

Here are a few on one sheet! All of the students could read their own names and some are starting to read the names of others! Many of the students are starting to read and spell the word to ….which is so exciting to watch it happen in the context of writing!
Reading and Goal Setting
I then write the sentence for each student onto a sentence strip and an envelop. The students cut apart each word. It’s easy because I made the words different colors.
Writing the entire sentence helps students because matching is an easier skill, plus it keeps the sentences organized. The students use these during guided reading and then in centers.
Here is the bear video read by Frank Ash, himself!!!!
